Block Links Overview

Block links enable you to insert references to other content in the context of entire topics. Typical block links are relationship table links, related links, and map links.

Block links are created with different elements or with attributes. For example, relationship table links are created in the reltable element, and map links are created by using a set of map attributes. Unlike inline links that are scattered across content, block links are more centralized which makes them easier to maintain.

Relationship table links

Links between topics that belong to the same map created in a reltable element at the end of the map.

Related links

Links to other topic that belong to the same map added in a related-links element at the end of a topic.

Map links

Links between topics that belong to the same map created with map attributes.

Considerations

Keep the following considerations in mind when inserting block links:

  • In contrast to inline links, block links are placed at the end of a given topic. That may prevent readers from navigating away from the topic before finishing reading it.
  • In contrast to direct inline links, block links do not limit topic reuse.
  • Various publishing engines and publishing scenarios may handle links differently. Always ensure that the links are resolved and rendered as expected in the output.
