Content Types
The Simplified Information Model includes six content types: general task, concept, reference, troubleshooting, glossary entry, and generic topic. Learn how to accurately classify information types and write highly effective content.
This model discusses standard DITA content types (no DITA specialization). Heretto CCMS provides default templates for each content type. You can modify the existing templates and create new templates in the CCMS to meet the unique needs of your team and content.
Each DITA topic type has a distinct purpose and structure that supports different types of information and user needs. Understanding these differences helps authors choose the right topic type for their content.
- [General] Task topic
-
Task topics provide the structure to create content that answers the question “How do I...?”. Tasks provide users with step-by-step instructions to accomplish a defined goal. The primary purpose of a task is to enable users to successfully perform a particular action using a product or system. For example, task information might guide users on how to configure a software setting, troubleshoot an error message, or install a hardware component.
- Concept topic
-
Concept topics explain ideas, principles, and other background information needed to understand a subject. Concepts provide “What is...?” background information and a deeper understanding of products, features, or tasks. For example, a concept might explain how a product fits within a category, explain the relationships between different components, or provide the basic principles that explain why a particular feature works. By presenting this foundational knowledge, concepts enhance the user's understanding and ability to effectively use and engage with complex technologies.
- Reference topic
-
Reference topics contain factual or tabular information that users need to consult while working. Typically, reference topics contain information that users “look up”, such as specifications or settings. They support the understanding of concepts and aid in performing tasks. For example, a reference topic might provide a table that lists network settings, their valid values, and a brief description of each setting.
- Troubleshooting topic
-
Troubleshooting topics help users diagnose and resolve problems by presenting symptoms, causes, and solutions for technical issues. They are not tasks, but support the successful completion of tasks. For example, if a user encounters an error while following the steps in a task topic, the documentation might include a reference to a troubleshooting topic that addresses that specific error.
- Glossary Entry topic
-
Glossary entry topics define terms and establish standard terminology for a documentation set. They are often a key component for creating and managing technical glossaries.
- [Generic] Topic topic
-
Topic content types are the most general content unit in DITA. They serve as the foundation for more specific topic types like task, concept, or reference. Use the Topic content type only to create warehouse topics for reusable content.
