Content Editor Overview

The Content Editor enables users to simultaneously collaborate on DITA topics and maps. This is where authors create concepts and maps on Heretto CCMS. This editor lets authors work on content without understanding DITA tags and constraints. The Content Editor is available to all users in CCMS, with different modes depending on the user's role. At Heretto, we use the Content Editor to create our documentation.

Quick Insert Menu

The quick insert menu enables you to quickly insert a DITA element in a valid position. You can open the menu by pressing Ctrl > Enter (Windows) or Cmd > Enter (Mac), or by clicking the plus icon on the left side of the Content Editor.

At the top of the quick insert menu, there's a drop-down menu where you can select your insert preference. You can choose from:
Insert Intelligently
Choosing this option prompts the quick insert menu to suggest inserting new elements in all possible valid positions. The quick insert menu indicates the suggested position of the element with a small arrow icon next to element's name. There are three options:
  • Arrow pointing right - means that the element will be inserted as a child of the current element.

For example, when you want to add a phrase element within a paragraph element.

  • Arrow pointing up - means that the element will be inserted before the current element.

For example, when you want to insert a note element before a definition list element.

  • Arrow pointing down - means that the element will be inserted after the current element.

For example, when you want to insert a paragraph element after a short description element.
Note: Insert intelligently is the default option in the quick insert menu.
Insert Before
Choosing this option prompts the quick insert menu to only suggest inserting new elements before the current element.
Insert After
Choosing this option prompts the quick insert menu to only suggest inserting new elements after the current element.

Note: The elements that display in the quick insert menu are context-sensitive. The list contains only valid elements for the location of your cursor. For example, the quick insert menu lets you add a steps element after a context element in task topics. Adding the steps element as a child of or before the context element is not possible.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Heretto CCMS enables you to quickly perform common actions by using keyboard shortcuts. You can access the keyboard shortcut list by clicking the keyboard icon in the toolbar.

When you hover over an element in the structure bar at the bottom of the Content Editor, the element will be highlighted and a curved arrow will point to it. If you click an element in the structure bar, Heretto CCMS gives you options for interacting with that element, such as removing it, moving it up or down in the topic, or inserting a new element before or after.
