Manage metadata configurations in Heretto CCMS by disabling or deleting fields and categories.
Managing custom metadata configurations in Heretto CCMS involves disabling or deleting metadata fields and categories. Users assigned the Administrator role in the CCMS can disable fields to phase them out safely before deletion, ensuring that metadata values remain intact. Deleting a field or category is irreversible and should be done with caution, as it affects the visibility and usability of metadata values in the system.
Disable a Metadata Field in a Metadata Category
Users assigned the Administrator role in Heretto CCMS can disable metadata fields in a metadata category. Disabling a metadata field can be easily undone. When phasing out metadata, we recommend disabling it first and deleting it once you are sure it's safe as deleting a metadata field cannot be undone.
To complete this procedure, you must be assigned the Administrator role in Heretto CCMS.
The metadata field is disabled in the metadata category. This action can be easily undone be re-enabling the metadata.
Once disabled, the metadata field is no longer visible in the CCMS interface, cannot be used as a search facet or in bulk-change operations, and cannot be added to files. Existing values assigned to files are preserved and can be viewed only via the REST API by going to .
Delete a Metadata Field from a Metadata Category
Users assigned the Administrator role can delete metadata fields from a metadata category. Deleting a metadata field cannot be undone. When phasing out metadata, we recommend disabling it first and deleting it once you are sure it's safe.

- In the top-left corner, click the Main Menu
and go to Metadata.
- Click Delete next to the metadata category you no longer need.
- In the confirmation window, click DELETE.
- Click Save Changes.

Delete a Taxonomy
Users assigned the Administrator role can delete entire taxonomies. Deleting a taxonomy cannot be undone. When phasing out metadata, we recommend disabling it first and deleting it once you are sure it's safe.
To complete this procedure, you must be assigned the Administrator role in Heretto CCMS.
Deleting a taxonomy removes metadata fields from the CCMS interface as well as the taxonomy itself. The configuration in the Metadata interface must be disabled or removed separately. Taxonomy values already added to files are preserved but can no longer be edited, removed, or replaced, and can only be viewed via the REST URL response. If you may need to use the taxonomy in the future, consider disabling the metadata configuration in the Metadata interface field instead. See Disable a Metadata Field in a Metadata Category.
- In the top-left corner, click the Main Menu
and go to Taxonomy.
- Click the X button to the right of the taxonomy you want to delete.
- In the confirmation window, click Delete.
The taxonomy is deleted from the Taxonomy interface. This action cannot be undone.
If taxonomy metadata is configured in the Metadata interface, it becomes invisible in the CCMS interface and cannot be used for search facets, bulk changes, or added to files. Existing values are preserved and viewable only through the REST API by navigating to .
If the taxonomy was set as a drop-down for a DITA attribute, the drop-down is no longer available. Attribute values remain in DITA XML, but new values cannot be added. Contact the Heretto team to remove the drop-down configuration and restore editing capabilities.
